There are many reasons why facial and body waxing can go wrong. The reason our brow artist, Ani White tweezes our clients’ brows to perfection, rather than using wax is because patients using retinols and other active ingredients in their skin care regimen are very susceptible to having their skin bruised and or broken when waxed.

For Ani’s clients that she does wax at her own salon, she always asks each client about their skin care regime and only uses high quality wax. Another great tip Ani suggests in the video, is to test the wax often on the inner wrist to check the temperature of the wax before using on clients.

As you can see in the video, all of these precautions are vital and must be taken into account when getting a wax treatment. Please watch the video below for more information from Ani White and to see what happened to a high school student just before her formal when she went to a salon that did not practice these important precautions.

Ani sees clients on Tuesday in our center city office and Thursdays in our Main Line office. To schedule an appointment with Ani, please call 215.561.deme(3363)

Acne scars can cause shame and embarrassment for many people living with discoloration and pitting of the skin. We treat several patients on a daily basis for their acne. Unfortunately, some people who suffer for several years with chronic acne end up with scars and do not realize they can be treated to have these acne scars refined. For those of you living with acne scars, or who have a friend or relative with this condition, please watch our latest video in which deme’s clinical aesthetician, Jane Marie D’Amato treats one of her patients with Pixel to remove her acne staining and refine the scarring. This is a 3 month process in which Jane Marie’s patient, Courtney will have 3 Pixel treatments about 1 month apart. While Courtney is experiencing some positive results 1 week out, Courtney will see her best results approximately 3 months out from her last Pixel treatment. Please feel free to follow along as Courtney goes through this skin transformation. As always, we welcome your questions and comments about the treatments you will see in this video.

In an article in the Philadelphia Inquirer, our plastic surgeon Dr. Kevin Cross was asked to comment on the demands and differing methods that are growing in the world of plastic surgery. Dr. Cross noted that “My patients in their 60s and 70s are often energetic women who like wearing the same stylish clothes as their daughters. They want to go to the beach and look good in a bikini.”

Dr. Cross is able to treat these patients by giving them flatter stomachs and even treat their “batwing” arms, the loose underarm flesh on the upper limbs, with “invisible” tightening. The incision is hidden in the armpit, replacing the telltale scar that used to stretch to the elbow. This “invisible” tightening of the arm is a procedure that Dr. Cross is highly sought after for and is among a select group doctors offering this type of procedure nation wide.
Dr. Cross feels that, “the demand for body sculpting is escalating, even among older men,”. More recently, men are feeling an urgent need to alter their appearance from influences within the workplace and on television. Liposuction, in fact, is the cosmetic procedure men between 30 and 60 request the most. In 2010, 37,183 men had excess fat sucked from their bodies, according to the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS). Most often, it is the love handles they want to shed.

But many also covet more youthful faces. Dr. Cross has recently done a lift on an 80-year-old man whose internist cleared him for the operation. “He’s totally healthy and fit, and you can do his surgery with my blessings,” he told Dr. Cross.

With new trends and scientific advances in plastic surgery, it is very important to us at deme that we are always on the cutting edge. We only offer procedures that are approved by Dr. Cross after much time and consideration. To read the full article on the demands and differing methods growing in plastic surgery, click here.

Do good quality, budget friendly skin care products exist? Skin care experts understand that no one has an unlimited budget when it comes to purchasing products for your skin care routine. With this in mind, The Philadelphia Inquirer came to Betsy Rubenstone, our director of clinical skin care at deme to find out what over-the-counter products can be trusted to use for people who do not have the budget to purchase medical grade products. While medical grade products have a higher percentage of active ingredients, you can get away with some over-the-counter products that contain a lower amount of these active ingredients.

Betsy suggests doing your homework by looking up a cosmetic ingredient online to find out more about it, or use a guide such as A Consumer’s Dictionary of Cosmetic Ingredients by Ruth Winter.

Exfoliation is a topic we often talk about here on our blog. This is because through exfoliating your skin, you will allow products to penetrate and get into the skin instead of sitting on top of dead skin layers. Facial brushes and washcloths are the most effective and nonirritating means of exfoliation, Rubenstone said.

Masks with alpha hydroxy acid and retinols and the common scrub are also good. The only concern with scrubs is that the particles should be uniform and the ingredients not too harsh. Exfoliating should take place once a week to start, Rubenstone said, and build up to three times a week.

For more budget friendly skin care products and tips and to read the full article click here.

Last month, the Nutra Sonic cleansing brush was mentioned in an article in The Wall Street Journal. The brush was listed as a viable and less expensive option to the Clairsonic cleansing brush with an oscillating head of about 300 times per second. A few dermatologists in the article state that the brush is particularly useful for people who experience blackhead and whitehead blemishes. As we have stated before in our blog, by loosening the dirt and bacteria in the pore with the Nutra Sonic cleansing brush you can achieve clearer, softer and brighter skin with the appearance of smaller pores.

Especially in the winter months, exfoliation is very important. So often when the skin is dry, we see that patients tend to load up on heavier creams to compensate for the dryness they are experiencing. What people fail to realize with dry skin is that you have dry skin cell buildup. The more you layer on the heavier creams, the more you are trying to re-hydrate dry/dead skin cells, which makes no sense! Instead, increase your exfoliation to remove the dry skin cells, and then moisturize the new skin cells, resulting in moisture-balanced skin. In addition to this, the active ingredients in your moisturizers and serums will now be able to work better for your skin on a deeper level. The Nutra Sonic cleansing brush is the perfect option for this light exfoliation.

The benefit of the Nutra Sonic cleansing brush is that it will also tackle the skin all over your body with specific targeted brush heads, not just your face. If you are experiencing all around dull, dry and flaky skin this winter, the Nutra Sonic cleansing brush may be the solution you are looking for.

The Nutra Sonic cleansing brush is available for $130 at deme. For more information on the Nutra Sonic cleansing brush, Click Here.

Some great deme products and services have been in the media recently and we wanted to make sure to share them with you.

In Allure Magazine alone, FIVE deme products were featured.

Celfix Cosmeceuticals DNA Youth Recovery Serum – An Elixir that has been found to correct 40-50 percent of damage caused by UV rays when applied twice a day. Also proven to improve fine lines and wrinkles.

Hydroquinone (as in our Peel & Bleach) – This product can stop dark spots in their tracks because it breaks down melanin while also working great on stubborn melasma and sun spots.

SkinMedica Redness Relief Complex – Derived from almonds, the chemical known as 4-ethoxybenzaldehyde has an impressive ability to soothe mild rosacea, essentially cutting off the blushing process before it begins. This ingredient is found in SkinMedica’s Redness Relief Complex.

Nia 24 Skin Strengthening Complex – Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) strengthens the delicate barrier of the skin that holds in moisture and keeps out irritants. The vitamin may slow melanin production and calm redness and has even been said to help with acne.

Xcell Gloss Cream – My personal favorite, mixture of TCA, antioxidants and a mild retinoid. Boosts cell turnover and collagen production while making the skin GLOW! Exfoliates along with 40% glycolic acid without irritation. To try this product, is to fall in love with it.

Our new, fabulous and much loved Dermasweep was recently featured in New Beauty Magazine. I won’t go through the whole article because those who are on the Dermasweep bandwagon know how well it works but just a few key points & reminders about why we love it:

The tips are designed for airflow throughout the bristle

The unique quality causes the skin to be gently drawn into the bristle, resulting in more effective exfoliation

The more effective airflow design allows the vacuum pressure to be used in a safe yet increasingly effective manner, more efficient use of vacuum enhances results by affective deeper layers of skin.

A selection of mild chemical infusions are applied to the skin after the dry exfoliation, sometimes in layers, leaving the skin fresh, hydrated and with little to no down time.
